The leading cause of children getting caught in human trafficking is lack of education, and therefore, desperation of the family. School is costly for families in Guatemala, so many children are unable to attend. Each of the children listed below are in unfortunate circumstances that make them at risk for being trafficked.

Hector Emanuel Gonzales Rir
Birthday: March 28, 2017 | 7 years old | Last Completed Grade: 1st
Hector is in the care of his grandmother because both parents were alcoholics. The father died in a motorcycle accident due to his drunken state and the mother disappeared without a trace, nothing has been heard from her for four years. They do not have their own house, the grandmother works seasonally. He does not study due to lack of resources because what his grandmother earns is barely enough for them to eat. Hector attended first grade last year.

Sarah is Hector’s sister. She is old enough to begin Kindergarten next year.

Edison is the third child of four, his parents are guardians of a farm where they work to be able to live there, however his father’s salary is not enough to cover his school needs.
Andrea Gissel Ramos Oliva

Andrea is an only child and lives with her father and mother, however, their family is in extreme poverty and are currently homeless. She was able to complete first grade and did very well. Unfortunately, they are unable to continue funding her education.
Santos Emmanuel Oliveras De Leon

Santos and his mother sell limes daily to provide their basic needs. His mother desires to send him back to school, but lacks the resources to do so.
Jefferson Alfredo Saquic De Leon

Jefferson is Santos’ brother. The family is homeless and unable to send the children back to school after completing first grade.
Keyla Abigail Eunice Ramirez

Keyla became an orphan when her father passed away and she was abandoned by her mother. Her uncle is taking care of expenses, but they do not have a home and lack the resources necessary for sending her to school.
Jonathan Ismael Ramirez Hernandez

Jonathan is Keyla’s brother. Jonathan became an orphan when his father passed away and he was abandoned by his mother. His uncle is taking care of expenses, but they do not have a home and lack the resources necessary for sending him to school.
Lucia Paulina Cos Chavix
8 years old | Last Completed Grade: 1st
Two years ago, Lucia’s father died of a common illness, leaving her mother with three girls, and without realizing at the time, was pregnant with their fourth child. Unfortunately, she and the baby died during childbirth, leaving the three girls orphaned. Currently, the girls are in the care of their maternal aunt. Lucia is the second of the three girls and desires to go back to school.
LUPITA Guadalupe Sian Hernandez

Lupita lives with her grandmother who is blind. Her mother passed away when Lupita was three years old and her father abandoned her, leaving the grandma to care for her. She will need special education from home because of her learning disability.
